Working Out with Netflix

If you’re like me, you struggle to find the time to get in a good workout. After a long day at work, the last thing I usually want to do is head out to the gym and get my sweat on (plus expensive gym memberships don’t make it any easier). When I graduated, I didn’t realize just how much I would miss that “free” gym on campus. Now, 8 months out, I feel like jelly.

I used to LOVE going to the yoga classes on campus. So refreshing, relaxing and just overall made me feel awesome and glow-y (yes… I love feeling glow-y!). I looked up a few yoga places in Gainesville and my jaw dropped when I saw the price. Are these people out of their minds?!?

Enter Netflix.

For awhile now, I’ve been doing Bethanny’s Yoga dvd. Okay, I lie. I’ve HAD the dvd for awhile now, I’ve used it probably a handful of times. Really, who wants to hear and do the same movements, jokes, etc every time they work out? Not me, I like variety. So, last night I decided to search Netflix for streaming yoga dvds. All I can say is WOW.

Who knew Netflix had so many yoga dvds streaming to your TV? And pilates dvds, and cardio dvds, and strength dvds. INSANE.

I added several of the 4+ star videos to my instant queue and will be starting one of them tonight.

I knew Netflix was saving us a bunch of $$$ each month, since we no longer go to the movie theaters (movie theaters rip you off, big time), but who knew they might possibly be able to replace a gym membership, too?

Okay, maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself suggesting Netflix could replace a gym membership, but for me it will have to suffice as we can’t really afford a gym membership.

Do y’all have any easy tips for fitting in an exercise session? What do you like to do to get your sweat on? Run? Power walk*? Yoga?

And, have y’all tried any of the Netflix streaming workout dvds?

I was in no way sponsored by Netflix to write this post. I just love Netflix. They save us loads of money and provide endless entertainment, but if Netflix would like to provide me with 1 year of service free for praising their awesome-ness, I’d be happy to take it! :)

*I’ve secretly always wanted to be one of those mall walkers that go power walk around the mall before the stores open. Sad, I know.

{Gasp! My first post without images! I guess 1 in every 240 posts isn’t that bad.}

I so didn’t even consider looking at Netflix for streaming workouts – thank you for knocking some common sense into me!

My best friend goes to SW Rec for free working at UF. As long as she’s taking 1 credit hour worth of classes (which her department pays for), she gets free gym access. All you have to do is head down to the gym at the start of every semester and re-enroll in person. Just in case you ever miss being with a group for yoga!

I’ve thought about getting a Netflix membership for a LONG time, but this just sealed the deal for me — as someone who really only works out at home (using DVD’s) this is perfect for me! Thanks for the recommendation!

I’ve invested in a few small workout tools (free weights, a stretchy band, yoga mat), and I incorporate that in with runs through the FSU campus. Also I browse through my fiancee’s Men’s Health for workout tips. Running and free weights require a lot of self-motivation, but it’s free!

  4. I ♥ Netflix.

I love this idea. I had Netflix, then gave it up because we weren’t using it often enough. But we have to give up our yoga memberships (I am REALLY sad about this) for financial reasons, so I might just have to start up again. I would love to see your recommendations as you go through them! I do hot Vinyasa/Power yoga, and it’s so hard to find videos that have nearly the effect of the studio.

Wow, you are really tempting me to sign up for Netflix. We have been thinking about it for a while now, but this just puts it over the top.

When I want to burn some calories, I go into a mad cleaning session in our apartment. You can burn some serious calories vacuuming, toting loads of laundry around, and scrubbing the crud out of your bathub! Extra plus is the clean house!
